Rotary's Guiding Principles
Rotary’s Four-Way Test
Rotary’s Four-Way Test is a timeless ethical guide used by Rotarians around the world to evaluate the things we think, say, or do. It asks four simple yet powerful questions:
- Is it the TRUTH?
- Is it FAIR to all concerned?
- Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
- Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
The Object of Rotary
The Object of Rotary is a guiding framework that inspires Rotarians to live out the ideal of service in every aspect of life. It’s beautifully structured around four key principles:
- The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service
- High ethical standards in business and professions, recognizing the worthiness of all useful occupations and dignifying each Rotarian’s work as a chance to serve society
- The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life
- The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service
It’s not just a mission statement—it’s a call to action that blends purpose with connection.
The Rotarian Code of Conduct
The Rotarian Code of Conduct is a set of ethical guidelines that reflects Rotary’s commitment to integrity, respect, and service. It encourages Rotarians to lead by example in both personal and professional life. Here’s a summary of its key principles:
- Act with integrity and high ethical standards in all areas of life
- Treat others and their occupations with fairness and respect
- Use professional skills to mentor, support, and uplift others, especially those with special needs or limited opportunities
- Avoid behavior that reflects poorly on Rotary or fellow Rotarians
- Help maintain a harassment-free environment at Rotary events and report any concerns without fear of retaliation
It’s more than a code—it’s a daily compass for how Rotarians show up in the world.
