Knocked it out of the park! That's what our interns did with the Donuts for Disaster fundraiser in April of this year.
Here's how it started. Greg Krauska, the District ShelterBox coordinator, made us aware of a challenge grant set up by District 5950. Any money raised by students and matched by the local club would be matched by the District. So, our interns did some brainstorming and determined that selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts would be a big hit. The fact that the closest Krispy Kreme doughnut shop was 230 miles away, in a suburb of Des Moines, just made the project more interesting.
Our initial goal was $1,000 in funds raised by the students and matched by our club. As we started selling doughnuts, we blew past that goal and past our revised goal of $2,000 and then, past our revised, revised goal of $3,000. The students raised $3,125. Wow! We didn't know what to say.
The next step was to get matching funds from our club. We were way beyond the $1,000 original commitment. But, due to the leadership of our President Jim Lockman and the support of our incredible Board, the club found a way to match the student funds. Now we had $6,250.
The next step was the District matching funds. When we started this project, the District only had $5,000 in matching funds remaining. We were hoping that we could convince the the District to match the full amount from the students and our club. The need for ShelterBoxes was growing because of the hurricane in Vonuatu and the earthquake in Nepal. With some great work by Greg and the support of a great number of people at the District level, they decided to match the full $6,250. Now, $12,500 was going to ShelterBox to buy 12 shelter kits with a little money left over.
Special thanks for this great accomplishment goes to Krista Kronlokken, Yasaman Rajaeian, and Ryan Starr. The EPHS Interact Club was also instrumental. John Kohner was critical to our success because he was the one that woke up early Monday morning to drive four hours down and four hours back to pick up the doughnuts. A special thanks goes to Greg Krauska for his on-going support through the whole process. Yeah, team!
